The Theology of Digital Money: A Christian Ethical Review of the Cryptocurrency and Online Lending (Pinjol) Phenomena

The disruption of financial technology (fintech) has radically changed the face of the economy, presenting two major phenomena: cryptocurrency as a speculative investment instrument and online loans (Pinjol) as instant credit access. For the church, these are not merely economic issues but serious theological challenges. Many church members are trapped in a "get rich quick" mentality through crypto or entangled in high-interest debts from illegal online lenders leading to psychological terror. This study aims to review both phenomena from a Christian ethical perspective. Using a qualitative literature review method with a theological ethics approach, this research finds that digital money must be repositioned as a tool, not a master. Regarding crypto, Christian ethics emphasizes anti-gambling stewardship principles and productivity. Regarding Pinjol, the church must voice an anti-usury theology that opposes oppression, consistent with the Biblical concept of neshek (biting interest). The church is called not only to preach but to provide financial literacy and social safety nets (transformative diaconia) for vulnerable congregants.
